Disconnect to Reconnect graphic

Effective January 2025, Broken Arrow Public Schools is launching the “Disconnect to Reconnect” initiative specifically for grades 9-12. This new approach to personal electronic device use is designed to create a more focused, connected, and positive school environment. (Board policy 4295) (Updated on 11/20/24 to provide clarity of the change in practice for grades 9-12. All elementary and middle school sites will continue operating without cell phones or personal electronic devices unless authorized by their teacher or administrator.)

Take a look at the results of a survey conducted in October, inviting parents and guardians to share their thoughts on students' use of cell phones and smartwatches during the school day.

Why “Disconnect to Reconnect”?

Studies show that limiting screen time during class can reduce distractions, lower stress, and encourage students to engage more fully with their learning and each other. By keeping devices off and out of sight during instructional time, we’re creating an environment where students can concentrate on what matters most—academic success, mental well-being, and positive relationships.

What’s Expected of Students:

Students in grades 9-12 will be asked to keep personal electronic devices (PEDs) off and put away during class time. PEDs include cell phones, earbuds, smartwatches, and any other similar devices. Devices may still be used:

  • During lunch or after school

  • With teacher permission for instructional purposes

  • In life-safety emergencies

For Parents:

This initiative supports our efforts to reduce classroom distractions and foster a healthier, more engaging school environment. Students in grades 9-12 will continue to have access to their phones during emergencies, and parents can always reach their child by contacting the school office.

For Staff:

Our teachers and staff will model this policy by using their devices only for instructional needs or in emergencies, ensuring a consistent example of device etiquette across campus. Teachers have discretion to allow device use when it enhances learning activities.

Thank you for supporting our mission to make schools a place of focus, growth, and connection. (Download Flier - English, Spanish)
